Some Common Questions

How do I get a student pilot certificate?

Visit an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) for a 3rd Class Medical Certificate. (Locate an AME near you). A student pilot certificate is good for 24 calendar months.

What medical standards are required for a 3rd Class Medical Certificate?

You can find the requirements here. A number of waivers and exemptions are available for a number of medical conditions. Alternately, you can qualify for a Light Sport Aircraft license with the same medical standards required for a driver’s license.

How long does it take?

FAA minimums are 20 hours for a Sport Pilot Certificate and 40 hours for a Private Pilot Certificate. Within these hours, students must meet certain minimum experience levels for various activities, such as flying from airport to airport, night operations, operations at airports with control towers, etc. The national average trends between 50-70 hours. Some students get their certificate in a few months, others take a year or longer.

How much does it cost?

Varies depending on number of hours flown, type of aircraft flown, and time spent with an instructor. The national average is between $5000-$7000.

Are there any age requirements?

You can take lessons at any age. You must be 16 to solo (fly without an instructor) and 17 to be issued a certificate (Sport or Private) that allows you to carry passengers. People from 16-80+ have learned to fly. It’s never too late to start!
